This teen drama begins in Tree Hill; a small, fictional town in North Carolina. Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) are worlds apart, but by a twist of fate, share the same last name. Lucas is a blue-collar, quiet, skillful basketball player and only son of a hardworking café owner, Karen Roe. (Moira Kelly) Nathan, however, comes from the one of the wealthiest family in town, and is the high school’s basketball star. Both are sons of Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), a former accomplished college basketball player turned successful car dealership owner. Dan’s past has returned to haunt them; having chosen his basketball career in high school, over Karen and Lucas, his son.

After the failure of his attempted career in basketball, Dan returned to his college wife and son, Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods) and Nathan. The lives of the two young men had not collided till then; when the basketball coach of Tree Hill recruited Lucas for the team. The tension rises further as Lucas falls for Nathan’s girlfriend, Peyton Sawyer. (Hilarie Burton) To add to the complications, Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush), Peyton’s best friend, had her sights set on Lucas quickly as well. Nathan didn’t take long to take notice of Hayley, (Bethany Joy Lenz) Lucas’s best friend, an interesting girl who aided in the improvement of Nathan’s character.
